NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED URBAN PLANNER WILL LEAD WORKSHOP TO TRANSFORM BROADWAY CORRIDOR
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Jan. 6, 2012 -- A workshop to design the future of Broadway will be led by nationally recognized urban planner. Dan Burden, named by TIME magazine as “one of the six most important civic innovators in the world”, will serve as the key facilitator for a highly interactive two-day public involvement planning process this February.
The workshop is the result of an Urban Land Institute (ULI) $12,000 grant awarded in November to the Greater Broadway Partnership and the Sacramento District Council of ULI. The purpose of the grant is to craft a vision plan for improving the landmark Broadway district.
The first of three community workshops will take place the evening of Fri., Feb 24th and Sat., Feb. 25th. The process will include focus group sessions, walking audits, brainstorming sessions, prioritization and citizen-driven “design table” workshops in which local businesses owners and residents help with solutions to Broadway’s economic development, design, parking and traffic issues. As part of the process, Burden will make a 20 to 40 minute presentation on “walkability” or traffic calming practices based on his experience with similar programs in more than 2,500 cities nationwide.
The purpose of the grant is to help Greater Broadway Partnership and ULI produce a roadmap and investment strategy for economic enhancement of the Broadway corridor from 4th to 28th Streets and includes the Marina District, The Tower District and Upper Broadway.
The Partnership and ULI are looking forward to the experiences and perspectives of residents, businesses and property owners in the Broadway corridor. For more information or to sign up to attend the Feb. 24th and 25th workshop, please contact the Greater Broadway Partnership at 916 737-1427 or greaterbroadwaypartnership@gmail.com.
