What's Happening Now

Welcome to New District Businesses!

Three new businesses have joined the Broadway Business District family in the past two months: Two restaurants (Slice of Broadway and Hokkaido) and Dimple Records.

Visit our Restaurant Listing and our Business Listing for more detailed information on their locations and hours.

Sacramento River Crossings Update

A map of the eight river crossings under consideration are available by clicking here.

New information regarding the process of defining the needs/purposes of a Sacramento River Crossing have been provided to the public at the following link:
http://www.cityofsacramento.org/transportation/planning-policy/SacRiverCrossingsStudy.html

While this site provides much valuable information, the most recently posted "Public Draft of the Opportunities and Constraints" under the section Stakeholder Materials particularly warrants your review.  This item will be discussed at the Board of Directors meeting on August 12th.  Comments may be emailed to  greaterbroadwaypartnership@gmail.com .

Also, you may recall that a survey was distributed to the public during the month of June.  Following is the result of the survey as reported by the project consultants:

"Nearly 1,700 people responded between June 14 and June 24. Of those responding, 1,035 said they live in Sacramento, while 409 identified themselves as West Sacramento residents.
Among the findings:
 - 70 percent of Sacramento residents and 88 percent of West Sacramento residents say implementing new crossing options are either “very important” or “important.”
 - Most respondents, 74 percent, say that a “bridge serving all modes of transportation” should be considered as a potential new crossing to improve connections across the River.  70 percent of Sacramento residents and 83 percent of West Sacramento residents say a new crossing’s ability to serve all modes is the highest priority.
 -  “Increased traffic in existing neighborhoods,” and “new biking and walking crossings won’t be provided” are the top overall concerns about adding any new crossings.
 - “Tower Bridge south to Sutterville Road” ranks highest as a preferred general location for an additional river crossing in this random, unscientific survey.  Locations further north and south followed closely behind.

The nearly 900 submitted comments highlight anticipated benefits and concerns related to improved or additional crossings.  Comments about perceived benefits are generally focused on travel-time savings and reduced congestion, improved River and community connections, and increased economic activity.  Comments about concerns are generally focused on facility costs, project timing, and potential for increased crime and traffic."
District News

Business Walk

The June 10th Broadway Business Walk, sponsored by the Broadway Partnership, City Economic Development Department and the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, was an unqualified success! Approximately 40 representatives visited over 100 businesses in the district to listen to owners' concerns and ideas regarding doing business in this area. Thank you to all of the business owners/managers who took time out of their busy schedules to answer our questions and to share ideas for increasing customers. A final report will be compiled and made available to all participants.

Board of Directors Welcomes New Member Celia Yniguez!

Celia Yniguez of the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency has joined our Board of Directors.  Ms. Yniguez has nearly 20 years of experience working in redevelopment and long range planning, including on streetscape projects, land use plans and commercial projects.  We look forward to the contributions we are sure she will bring to the board.

Getting Ready for Summer!

The Broadway summer banners have returned to the district. During warm weather months, pedestrian traffic increases. Please do your share to keep the district clean and safe by maintaining your storefront and/or property through weed abatement and locking your dumpster to discourage transients.

Also, please see our Member Services page for easy ways to report graffiti, street and food vending, and all suspicious activity, including loitering and panhandling.

Graffiti Abatement Program

Beginning May 21st, Graffiti Removal Services (GRS), a professional graffiti removal firm, will be working in our district. GRS staff will do an initial “sweep” of the area to identify and remove graffiti from commercial properties. Thereafter, they will conduct an area visual sweep to identify and remove graffiti every two weeks. Entry Permission Forms are required to be completed by the property or business owner before GRS can perform this service.

If you are eligible for this service but have not yet completed a form, click here.

Street Maintenance

Effective April 16th the street maintenance contract was assumed by Hilary Gould.  Hilary and his crew will provide the following services:  litter pickup, removal of shopping carts, emptying of trash receptacles in the public right of way, leaf removal, removal or reporting of illegal dumping, weed abatement, and the removal of illegal postings (signs).  Additionally, he will work closely with the City’s Code Enforcement Department to insure adherence to existing codes and regulations.  We feel confident that the end result will be a cleaner, safer more inviting commercial area.

Board Votes Against Increase in Special Assessments

For the second year in a row, the Board of Directors voted unanimously not to increase property assessments in the Broadway Improvement District.

When established, the Greater Broadway Partnership Property and Business Improvement District authorizing legislation gave discretion to the Board of Directors to increase parcel assessments up to 3% per year.  Recognizing the hardship this would cause businesses and property owners in these difficult economic times, rather than increase revenues, the Board is re-committing itself to insuring the best value is delivered with existing revenues.

Restaurants Historic Rose Garden Wins International Award

The volunteer-run rose garden in the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery, on Broadway, was selected for a prestigious award in May by the Great Rosarians of the World.  The rose garden features over 500 varieties of roses, some dating back as far as the Gold Rush.

The Cemetery is open daily from 7:00am to 7:00pm.
